Self Portrait of a Migraine

NFS
Daphne Clark is primarily a Western artist based in rural North Dakota. This piece, however, departs from that theme to explore her experience with chronic migraines, often 18 or more each month. Inspired by Vincent van Gogh and two of his self-portraits, Daphne reflects on the invisible wounds of pain. Rather than depicting a self-inflicted injury, this work centers on the head and the paradox that the things we love chocolate, a glass of wine, or time in the sunshine, can also bring suffering. Living with both chronic migraines and back pain from scoliosis and degenerative disc disease, Daphne finds creating art and staying active help her stay grounded and present.
