Executive Assistant, Health Advocacy, Non-Profit — Part Time, Contract (Remote)

Organization: Chronic Pain Project
Location: Portland, OR (Remote)
Duration: 6-Month Contract
Hours: 8 hours/week
Compensation: $20–$25/hr DOE

About Us

The Chronic Pain Project (CPP) is a Portland-based nonprofit that creates visibility for artists living with chronic pain through curated exhibitions, workshops, and community programming. We're a small, all-volunteer organization in our third year—doing meaningful work on a lean budget. Our community includes 60+ artists from five countries, and our work is reaching new venues and new audiences every season.

About This Role

We're looking for an assistant who can work closely with the Executive Director as a true right-hand person—someone who takes things off her plate and follows through without a lot of hand-holding. This is a part-time contract position (8 hours/week) running six months, with the possibility of extension depending on organizational needs and fit.

The specific mix of tasks will adapt to your strengths and where CPP needs the most support. You'll have real ownership over your areas of responsibility. Your work time is flexible, work when you are at your best!

You are a fit for this role if: You possess a deep sense of empathy and a desire to be part of an outlet for people with chronic pain. You are highly organized, and bring a warm, human-centric approach to the work environment. You aren't just looking for a job; you want your daily effort to have a direct, positive impact on human health and well-being.

What You'll Do

  • Executive support — Assist the Executive Director with research, scheduling, correspondence, and follow-through on action items

  • Artist relations — Stay in regular contact with our participating artists: answering questions, sending updates, and making sure people feel connected and cared for

  • Venue & partner outreach — Research potential exhibition spaces and organizational partners, compile contact information, and draft initial outreach for ED review

  • Sponsor & funder research — Identify potential corporate sponsors or grant funders, pull relevant background info, and help track outreach status

  • Light project management — Keep tasks and timelines organized and flag anything at risk of falling through the cracks

  • Short sprint projects — As ideas unfold you may be asked to dig into the details of making them happen, for example diving into a knowledge space or getting answers to functional questions

What We're Looking For

  • Excellent written communication — you write clearly, warmly, and professionally

  • Comfortable working independently and managing your own time; you don't need someone checking in on you constantly

  • Detail-oriented and reliable; you follow through on what you say you'll do

  • Comfortable with technology and picking up new tools quickly

  • Familiarity with any of the following is a plus: Zeffy, Google Workspace, Monday.com, or similar project management platforms

  • Genuine interest in CPP's mission — Our community includes many people living with chronic pain, and empathy matters here

Nice to Have

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • You bring a background in art, arts management and/or experience with CRMs and creating efficient processes

  • Experience supporting projects with lots of moving parts

To apply

Click on this link. You will be asked to:

  • Tell us about your background and why this work appeals to you (no cover letter template — just talk to us like a person)

  • Upload your resume

  • 2 short writing samples — an email, memo, or any professional correspondence you're proud of

We'll ask finalists to tell us about a task or project they took on independently and saw through from start to finish.

Our Process:

This application will be open until Friday, June 5 at 5p. After that, a select number of individuals will be invited to a first round interview with a Board Member of the Chronic Pain Project.

Following that, we will invite a subset of the first group to a second round interview with the Executive Director.

This is a U.S.-based position. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States. This is an independent contractor role (1099); the selected candidate will be responsible for their own taxes and benefits.

Looking for a different way to contribute? We also have volunteer roles available.
